Good news from the Department of Labor, headed by Secretary Hilda Solis, and now acting to boost protections against discrimination, unfair pay and other workplace issues.
Fairness in pay – The Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division has added 250 more investigators to look into pay disputes and resolve issues. This will bring more enforcement to the rules against unfair practices.
Discrimination – protection will be expanded to more individuals through a broader definition of disability under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act).
Union rights – Changes in the National Labor Relations Board mean more worker-friendly hearings coming up. For example, the definition of a supervisor may be more narrowly defined by the new board, making more workers eligible to join a union.
Workplace safety – tougher enforcements from OSHA (the Occupational, Safety & Health Administration) are in the works, further protecting individuals in the workplace.
Tough economic times are hard on many working people. Lets cheer for our new Secretary of Labor, who gets it right!
